Why Social Stories Matter: Supporting Children with Autism
For many children with autism, everyday situations can feel unpredictable and overwhelming. Whether it’s a visit to the doctor, starting a new routine, or learning how to share, unfamiliar experiences can lead to anxiety or stress.
At Learning Perch, we use social stories as a powerful tool to help ease these transitions and support our leaners.
What Are Social Stories?
Social stories are short, personalized narratives that help individuals with autism understand social situations, behaviors, and expectations. They use clear language, visuals, and a personalized story to prepare children for real-life events.
Originally developed by Carol Gray, social stories are now used by therapists, teachers, and parents to support children across a variety of settings. These stories can be made for any situation in any setting.
These stories help children by:
Reducing anxiety by explaining what will happen
Improving understanding of social rules and behaviors
Supporting transitions (e.g., from home to school, or between activities)
Teaching communication and self-advocacy skills
Promoting independence through visual learning
Common Situations for Social Stories
Social stories can be created for almost any scenario. A few situations that are highlighted are going to the doctor or dentist, learning how to wait, share, or take turns, or playing with a new friend.
To be effective, a social story should be:
Simple and clear – Use language the child understands
Visual – Include pictures or illustrations
Personalized – Use the child’s name and familiar situations
Positive – Focus on what the child can do
Repetitive – Read often for reinforcement
